Ralph Waldo Emerson Essay
The recent announcement by the government to declare Telengana as the 29th state with 10 districts and Hyderabad as a common Capital has opened a Pandoraââ¬â¢s Box of similar clamors. Many groups have stepped up their game demanding for their own statehood. The government will have to ponder many factors before redrawing boundaries and splitting up states. ââ¬ËNationalismââ¬â¢ has always remained the most controversial creed in the political theory. It cannot be merely defined as the casual association of people within a territory. It is the sharing of some popular beliefs, ascribing a common political identity to its entire people and sharing a common history. In this context the internal outcries for separate statehood cannot be ignored prima facie. Also more and more stifling of these demands will be a call for disaster. These types of internal conflicts have always been a head-ache for governments worldwide and they are still searching for a way-out. India is a nation lauded for ââ¬ËUnity in Diversityââ¬â¢ and a large number of minority groups of ethnic, tribal, cultural and social origin exist within the country and have been living harmoniously since Independence. They have been amply protected under our Constitution taking into consideration their capacity to influence the populace so that their voice too is eloquently heard in a highly democratic nation like ours. However in case they feel subjugated or threatened they have the full right to protest. Their demand for separate statehood comes from the limbo they have remained in since time immemorial. They feel that a separate autonomous state would give them a better chance of survival, development and above all better administration. Andhra Pradesh when formed by the union of British-States and princely provinces after Independence was on linguistic basis i. e. they all spoke Telugu. However Jawaharlal Nehru said at the time that in case anyone feels uneasy by their counterparts they can ask for dissociation. The plea for Telengana as a separate state had been going on for several years abrogating its ties with coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalseema. What triggered the demand was its continuing negligence in developmental schemes for the state. However, stiff opposition has also risen from the latter regions thereby placing the government in a quandary. The internecine demands for Hyderabad as Capital of the state, by both the regions have exacerbated the situation. It has conclusively served as a bolster to similar demands from other parts of the nation. The Nagas, an ethnic group claims that they have been demanding for a bigger Nagaland by consolidating the Nagas from various Eastern states like Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Assam from time immemorial and hence they should be the first to be considered. The cry for Vidarbha, an autonomous state in Maharashtra, Gorkhaland in West Bengal have become more ferocious. There has also been a demand to split up the large Uttar Pradesh into four states for better administration-Avadh Pradesh, Purvanchal, Bundelkhand and Paschim Pradesh. The armed conflicts by Kukis, an ethnic group in Manipur is also for their own state. The conflicts ended after signing a Suspension of Agreements (SoA) in 2005 by the Indian Army and the Kuki National Party and United Peopleââ¬â¢s Front, the two main parties under whose umbrella the protests were organized. The Agreement was signed after the promise from Prime Minister to hold conducive talks which is yet to take place. State wide protests and hartaals have already begun in all these states since the announcement for Telengana. However the premise of the argument that smaller state means better administration is fallacious in nature. Splitting up of the nation into several small states might result in the fact that their voices might be trampled upon. It will take some time until they become really autonomous recovering from the protests and conflicts with a stable economy. In such a scenario a hostile contiguous state sharing its boundary is certainly not conducive. Also it will be only a matter of time for these demands to take on a communal character. That is a price we have already paid for and are suffering from its after impacts even today. The government has to hold many productive talks and discussions with the states concerned and should thoroughly look for all other viable options before hastening into any decision. Therefore taking a holistic view and after careful deliberation only the decision to demarcate and redraw boundaries forming more and more states should be taken.

Do you like chocolate?
ââ¬Å"Do you like chocolate? â⬠If asked, most people would smile and say, ââ¬Å"of course I do. â⬠But if that same person asked if you thought chocolate was a good for your health, even beneficial, youââ¬â¢d probably have some doubts. For those doubters: Think again. Evidence has lead scientists and health-specialists around the world to agree that chocolate can be beneficial to your health. Dark chocolate has gotten a bad rap, almost since the late 1800ââ¬â¢s when a man named Hershey began an empire lacking the true essence of chocolate. Today, when people consider cardiovascular strength and fitness, chocolate is probably one of the last things theyââ¬â¢d add to a health-conscious diet regimen. Then, if we pair dark chocolate consumption with empowering the heart, people would be waiting for the punch line. Dark chocolate and a good healthy heart can, in fact, be allies. But there are some rules and guidelines that must be followed. Christopher Columbus, during his ship-going years, made a stop off the Honduras coast and discovered that natives had a strange almond-like nut. It was a cacao bean, the heart of what chocolate is. Chocolate, specifically dark chocolate, has received kudos from scientific research. Researchers correlate dark chocolate to a component of a healthy diet. When we enter the dessert and snack world of chocolate, there is potential for danger, even harm. The mass-production of Hersheyââ¬â¢s and other chocolate companies have belittled the essence of pure chocolate of Belgium. Many people are more likely to agree with the old adage that says, ââ¬Å"Beware, chocolate is not good for you. Thus, there is some truth to this statement. Archeologists say that Olmecs, which is now Mexico, were a people who drank chocolate a thousand years before Christ. The Mayans, a very cultured race, were the first to create a sacred drink of cacao. The Mayans roasted and powdered the beans. They mixed it with chiles, herbs, and wild honey to produce a special beverage. The cacao drink was regarded as one of the most special drinks of the Mayan race, being saved for times of tribute. With all this historical strength behind cacao and chocolate, we can see that there is power in chocolate. Today, there are many types of chocolate, so the benefits depend almost entirely on what kind of chocolate that you choose to eat. Dark-chocolate-research has found evidence that it can help in building in a better heart and strengthening the cardiovascular system. Dr. Joseph Mercola, author of Total Health Program, was very skeptical when he first began to look at chocolate as a healthy snack. This skepticism might be most peopleââ¬â¢s initial reaction because itââ¬â¢s been ingrained into our minds from a very young age that although chocolate tastes great itââ¬â¢s not good for you. To further Dr. Mercolaââ¬â¢s skepticism, he found out that the basis of his secondary research came from a chocolate company. Dr. Mercola was concerned that this chocolate company was biased and merely attempting to reach consumers with a marketing technique to increase sales. The conflict of interest was too obvious. But his skepticism was soon diminished when he looked at some astounding scientific proof. In just the past seven years, there have been more and more independent confirmations that dark chocolate truly has health benefits. These confirmations, according to Dr. Mercola, appeared to establish a framework for strengthening the fact that there indeed are health rewards from eating small amounts of flavonoid-rich dark chocolate. Careful reflection and study of the birth of chocolate helps to clear the picture a bit further. Chocolate, as I mentioned, stems from the cacao bean. Trying to ingest pure cacao lead you spit it out due to its bitterness. The cacao, however, is a key ingredient surrounding dark chocolateââ¬â¢s health benefits. The missing ingredient of course is sugar. Sugar needs to be filtered in before chocolate can be regarded as such a luxury dessert that itââ¬â¢s matured into for society. There are hidden drawbacks to chocolate that must be remembered. For one, when shopping for dark chocolate keep in mind that many of the popular, processed brands readily available in markets and grocery stores are often contaminated with large amounts of lead. You must be wary of those Hersheyââ¬â¢s bars. Just as in most undertakings in life, moderation is the key. Dark chocolate consumption, when ingested in small amounts can actually be very good for you. Dr. Mercola wrote, ââ¬Å"It is important to keep in mind, however, that you can derive a majority of the benefits chocolate provides (via flavonols) by consuming fruits like blueberries, apples and grapes, and most all vegetables, including broccoli, greens and onions. This is obviously a method Dr. Mercola would prefer most people utilize instead of chocolate. Itââ¬â¢s been ingrained in our heads since infancy to ââ¬Å"eat your vegetables. â⬠Itââ¬â¢s easy to see why Mercola counters his discussion regarding chocolate-health by promotingââ¬âas an asideââ¬âthat you eat your vegetables, too. This is a wise promotionââ¬âespecially for a doctor wanting to maintain his reputation for the mass public and his patients. However, a bowl of broccoli doesnââ¬â¢t have the same rewards as a little dark-chocolate-sugar-boost every once in a while, particularly when you realize it is good for your heart. As I mentioned, when we consider dark chocolate as a moderating alternative, vegetables are boringââ¬âat least to the chocolate lover. Just remember, too much chocolate tips the scales toward disaster. So, if chocolate is something that makes you salivate then remember to follow some of these common sense rules: 1. Eat only dark chocolateââ¬âor organic, if you want to really streamline the healthy components of chocolate consumption. 2. Organic chocolate carries specific antioxidants that can shield the body from oxidative stress. 3. Do not eat chocolate if you are battling serious disease or ailments. According to scientific data, the Kuna Indians of Panama eat three to four cups of flavanol-rich cocoa daily. The main ingredient, epicatechin, is responsible for offering vascular health benefits to the Kuna Indians. When they drank certain cocoaââ¬âanother favored past-time of civilized nations around the worldââ¬âthey received higher levels of nitric oxide, where the flavanol was absorbed into the bloodstream. Lead contamination can be found in processed chocolateââ¬âsometimes extremely high quantities of lead. The concern of lead contaminants in chocolate is not new. There was great concern, in the past, over processed cocoa plants being contaminated by leaded gasoline. The source of additional contamination is unknown. It might have come during the shipping process or somewhere along the manufacturing lines in chocolate plants. As scary as it sounds, there is some evidence that points out that high blood-lead levels in children can result in learning disabilities, damage to a childââ¬â¢s brain processing, and loss of some memory skills. To counter this grave concern, further chocolate studies performed in two reputable scientific journals say dark chocolate is good for you, NOT white or milk or processed chocolate. Along with flavanol, there is evidence of other benefits. For one, flavonoids can raise levels of HDL cholesterol. This is beneficial cholesterol. It also acts as an antioxidant which protects human cells from free-radicals. Itââ¬â¢s these very radicals that can lead to aging, heart disease, and certain cancers. Plant phenol is another substance that can help individuals out by lowering blood pressure. The location of where chocolate is made is another important consideration. Chocolates that are made in Europe tend to be richer in cocoa phenols in comparison with cocoa in the United States. The United States, unfortunately, since the early 1900ââ¬â¢s chose to focus on mass production and not on getting the most of this luxurious cacao bean. Now that youââ¬â¢ve got a glimpse of the health benefits of dark chocolate, itââ¬â¢s important to remember this: Nothing is simple about good chocolate and you wonââ¬â¢t find it in most drug stores. In fact, if you ask some chocolate connoisseurs about it, theyââ¬â¢ll tell you that the term good chocolate was derived from palet or, which, when translated means ââ¬Å"pillow of gold. â⬠David Lebovitz, a pastry chef and chocolate connoisseur, is another fierce advocate for the fancy final product of unprocessed dark chocolate. He has developed some recipes such as an easy-to-prepare Red-Wine and Apple Tart? David offers over 100 recipes to tantalize the taste buds while keeping health at the forefront front of your dietary plans. In closing, itââ¬â¢s important to remember that good dark chocolate is available all over the world. Many European pastry chefs claim it is their artââ¬âand there is a lot of presence in Europeââ¬âbut there isnââ¬â¢t a code set to be cracked by the nationalities of Europe. It is a world-wide consumable. You just have to do a little research to find the true chocolate where you live. Also remember that the benefits of chocolate come from using common sense and following these simple guidelines: 1. Eat only dark chocolate; 2. Eat chocolate in moderation; 3 do not eat processed chocolate. Share this information with friends and loved ones as you add this delectable sweet to your health-conscious diet.

Analytical response Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Analytical response - Essay Example It will also evaluate the concept of popular culture as a melting point for transnationalism. The paper will also go on to examine the relationship between transnationalism and religion and its implication on pedagogy. Transnationalism Transnationalism refers to the social matter that grows from the interconnectivity between people and the disappearance of national boundaries. This is because it evolves from the integration of minorities and foreign persons into a nation's cultural and social spheres. ââ¬Å"The concept of transnationalism was coined in the early 1990s by an enterprising group of social anthropologists to refer to the multi-stranded activities created by immigrants across national bordersâ⬠(Ben-Refael and Sternberg, 2009: p568). This implies that transnationalism is borne out of the cultural osmosis that culminates from the migration and settlement of foreign nationals in a given nation or state. Lionet and Shih (2005) go further to say that prior to the 1980s when migration became common around the world, national cultures were somewhat homogeneous. People maintained their real identities and did not really have direct linkages to other cultures. In most cases, these ââ¬Å"otherâ⬠cultures were deemed as ââ¬Å"foreignâ⬠. ... However, after the advent of globalization and multiculturalism, nation-states need to be a little more accommodating due to the restructuring of the global order (Salih, 2013). Thus, the rest of this paper will involve a critique of the main themes of transnationalism. This will include an examination of elements that have changed with transnationalism from the core elements of the course. Transnationalism and Identity Obviously, in the current dispensation of globalization and multiculturalism, the identities of people are destined to be questioned and people are bound to change in accordance to the modification of their environments and places of domicile. Zalanga starts his analysis of the relationship between identity and transnationalism by examining the core thesis of the Marxist theory. This exegesis states that people are born into preexisting social systems and structures and hence, they grow up to honor the elements and values of the social system they were born into. This argument is true, in that different people have different attitudes and approaches to others depending on their social values and their social norms and traditions. The variations of social systems spans across the different continents and nations around the world. Thus, in a typical situation, transnationalism involves one person who grew up and spent his formative years in a single environment (Zalanga, 2012). This individual builds his conceptions and worldview around a given social system and social framework. However, such an individual may migrate and find himself or herself in a totally different nation and environment in which he might be surrounded by a totally different nation and a totally

Since the mid-nineteenth century income inequality across nations has Term Paper
Since the mid-nineteenth century income inequality across nations has increased dramatically. Discuss the sources and consequenc - Term Paper Example Nineteenth century witnessed collapse of pre-modern empires like the Roman Empire (Mokyr 40). As a result, new political entities, including the British and German empires came into existence. These changes created corresponding dynamics within economic sectors in affected regions. Since then, the world continues to experience shifts in economic dynamics from one region to another. Numerous theories strive to explain causes and consequences associated with these economic shifts. In order to understand what really happens, it is appropriate to look back at history and identify what caused economic changes at those times. Subsequently, we will be able to explain current economic inequality witnessed in modern societies across the world. Introduction In this context, political and social changes that took place during industrial revolution makes 19th Century the starting point of contemporary economic disparities. This period saw the rise of European powers into leading advancement in e xplorations and social modernization. Great Britain championed industrial revolution, which totally changed productivity and wealth creation across the globe. It was during this time that scientists came up with numerous breakthroughs in the field s of mathematics, electricity, chemistry and metallurgy (Mokyr 43). As a result, Great Britain and other European nations resolved to engage in industrial production of goods and mining activities. In this case, new resources that were not discovered and exploited in earlier empires came into existence. Improvement of transport networks through railway lines and establishment of urban settlements changed ways of living. On the other hand, Japan, Germany, and Portugal embarked on programs meant to spark modernization within their economic sectors. Great Britain led the world into abolition of slave trade in Europe, America, and Brazil. As a result, adoption and application of Liberalism started prevailing in modern government systems. Liber alism translated into the economic system of capitalism, which advocated for liberalized pursuit of economic goals by individuals within the society. Therefore, those who had access to key raw materials could utilize them for profit and wealth generation (Mokyr 44). On the other hand, poor citizens of these empires were employed in mines and industries as casual laborers. In this regard, integration of Liberalism and Capitalism marked inception of economic and income inequalities. In addition, globalization derives its roots from this period when economic performance of one nation could influence performance in another related country. Colonization spread into Africa and Asia where colonizers acquired additional wealth from unexploited territories. As a result, the scramble and partition of Africa by Europeanââ¬â¢s major powers influenced economic changes through wealth acquisition from the colonies. All these economic changes resulted in advancement and increase of economic dist ribution and income inequality in the world. Income Inequality: Definition In this context, income inequality or economic inequality refers to distribution of assets and factors of production within a given economic region under consideration. Factors of economic production include major assets like land, capital, and labor. Income inequality changes depending on the period of time and economic
Elimination of the Quality Issues and the Retention of Business Case Study - 5
Elimination of the Quality Issues and the Retention of Business - Case Study Example Quality is an aspect which has gained importance and recognition around the world. The three components of quality which are quality control, quality assurance and quality improvement on a constant basis have become the core functions of numerous organizations since consumers are now well informed and not ready to compromise on quality. As the case suggests, the quality standards set by Presto Cleaners clearly did not meet the consumersââ¬â¢ standards and resulted in a lot of problems for the consumers (Dale B, van der Wiele T, van Iwaarden J, 2007). à Quality standards, in this case, did not revolve around the quality of the product itself but the means used to communicate and transfer the service to the consumer. Quality management must then be implemented whereby quality assurance is guaranteed both with the products and the processes used to deliver the service altogether. Without the implementation of appropriate quality standards, preferably those that are in line with the principles and guidelines set by the ISO standards of quality, an organization will not be able to effectively conduct business and might even fail to retain let alone attract new business. This was exactly what happened in the case of Presto Cleaners; Mr. Shelton was not satisfied with the services Presto Cleaners had provided and demanded compensation for the loss incurred by him or else lose out on business.à The objectives for which one chooses a product or service maintain a direct link with quality i.e. if the purpose for which the service, in this case, is chosen is not fulfilled the consumer would face quality issues (Howard S. Gitlow, 2005). When the Presto Cleaners opened their doors to customers, Mr. and Mrs. Shelton chose this service mainly because of the convenient location, suitable working hours and most importantly the friendliness and helpful nature of the staff. However, the cost was higher than competitors located in the vicinity, the Sheltonââ¬â¢s gave Pre sto preference because they wanted to seek the quality services even if they had to pay higher costs for it.

Information Security Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Information Security - Essay Example In addition, customersââ¬â¢ issues produce the need for companies to manage information security in a proper and effective manner. In this scenario, organizations integrate a task to look after customer and governmental proprietary data and details by guaranteeing observance with the laws and regulations. Thus, an organized collection of procedures, people and information technology (IT) structure that protects decisive systems and information, and secure them from inside as well as outside intimidations is known as information security management (ISM) (Sipior & Ward, 2008), (Northern Illinois University, 2007) and (Grimaila, 2004). Security Issue The basic issue which I have chosen for this SLP is about information hacking. In our daily lives we often see this kind of security breach. People around us with negative intentions steal someoneââ¬â¢s personal information in an attempt to make illegal use of it. This personal information could encompass various sensitive things suc h as computer passwords, email passwords, social security number, credit card number and a lot of others. The basic purpose of information hacking is to create problems for others. It could be intentional or unintentional. For instance, a hacker can hack a personââ¬â¢s billing information along with secret password and afterward can make illegal use of this information. This security is also very critical for the organizations since organizations can face a variety of information hacking issues. In this scenario, information hacking could be very harmful for the organization. The fundamental principles should be pursued to deal with this issue are: (Sipior & Ward, 2008), (Northern Illinois University, 2007) and (Grimaila, 2004) Information fortification, support and revitalization: Organizational information security measures, comprising systems, computer units, and data along with documentation arrangement, recognized by this rule, should be implemented in such a way that practi cally lessens the danger of inside or outside violations to the safety, integrity and confidentiality of organizational information. In addition, the users of information are anticipated to protect such private information in conformity with permissible responsibilities and managerial guidelines and measures, comprising confidentiality and exposure contracts. They should comprise tactics prepared to re-establish such information to guarantee the persistence of the crucial operations for the organization (Sipior & Ward, 2008), (Northern Illinois University, 2007) and (Grimaila, 2004). Information Integrity: Information security protectors should use appropriate confirmation and corroboration actions with the intention that the information, utilized in the search of assessment and decision making, might be expected to be correct (Sipior & Ward, 2008), (Northern Illinois University, 2007) and (Grimaila, 2004). Information Secrecy and Leakage: The importance of information like an organ izational resource augments through its extensive and correct utilization on the other hand its

A World of Art - Essay Example Perhaps staring out from his asylum window, Van Gogh saw the world as both beautiful and lonely (p.61). Also, the tall, bold and white church in the middle gives a sense of balance and stability to the painting amongst the uncontrolled swirls, highlighting Van Goghââ¬â¢s feelings of religion in the world. Sol LeWittââ¬â¢s Wall Drawing No. 681 is also a masterpiece of lines but in a more controlled and logical way (p.64). The four perfect squares with precise lines in four different directions marked by dark boundaries illustrate a regular, mathematical sequence. Lewittââ¬â¢s use of soothing, colorful lines emanates feelings of peace and unity. Also, the perfection and uniformity of the lines are practically instructing the viewers on how to replicate such exquisiteness themselves (p.65). Lewitt uses the most basic of lines, showing how the world abounds with beauty in the simplest of lines and strokes. Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez depicts a large room in King Philipââ¬â ¢s palace with the little princess standing gracefully in the middle (p.155). She is surrounded by maids, chaperones, a dwarf and even Velazquez himself; all positioned in such a way around her allowing the viewer to take in the spaciousness of the room. Some figures are interacting with themselves while others gaze out of the painting creating a sense of movement projected beyond the boundaries of the canvas. The towering easel on the left, the dark ceiling above and the shadowed paintings behind the princess aptly reveal the length and height of the room. Also, the light shining on the figures shows how they are standing in the front, away from the dark and distant background, giving an effect of not only the vastness of space but also creating a sense of balance and uniformity. The lightness of the floor and part of the right wall in addition to the shadowy ceiling and back wall allow the eyes to travel all around the room effectively taking in the organizational space. Also, the depth of the room just doesnââ¬â¢t end at the rear wall, for the open doorway to the right, leads the vanishing point further back, extending the visualized space a viewer initially took in. The paintings hanging behind and to the right of the figures give a grid-like pattern to this masterpiece, reinforcing the overall spatial harmony and balance. Also, the effect of vast space is further exaggerated by Velazquez by showing a mirror in the middle of the rear wall, reflecting the King and Queen which are not even present in the room. This adds to the overall spaciousness of the painting creating a sense of space not limited to the boundaries of the canvas. Edward Hopperââ¬â¢s oil painting, Nighthawks, shows a few people sitting around in a brightly lit diner at night (p.510). The darkened windows and street outside lets the viewers know that it is late at night creating a sense of isolation and loneliness. The only light falling on the otherwise dull, red brick building acros s the street is from the practically empty diner called Phillies. The dark black exterior of the diner stands in stark contrast to the bright cherry red, yellow and green colors inside. This counter balance of colors creates a somber and depressing mood reminding us that even though the world is still there all around us, it is filled with intense gloom and loneliness. The light shines brightly off the metallic containers and even the bartenderââ¬â¢

Customer Perception and Brand Loyalty Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Customer Perception and Brand Loyalty - Essay Example Pomerantz, (2003) defined perception as a process of attaining awareness or understanding environments by interpreting information. This statement is based on normal human psychology that can be related to the customer perception. Customer perception is a process that is based on the information collected from wide arrays of sources and resources. It can be the case that customers using the existing product or service may create awareness along with changing the level of perception about that particular product or service. Organisations need to understand the perception of customers in order to market their products and services along with offering them something that will exceed the level of perceived perception. Customer perception decides their buying behavior to an extent. Considering the fact that good and valid perception about a product often creates a positive image that allures customers to get associated with that product or service in the short as well as in the long run. Customer perception can be considered as the first stage of buying behavior where there is a difference between the reality and perception. Until and unless, customers use the product; ascertaining the reality can be a cumbersome task offering irrelevant attention and importance to perception (Reichheld, 1993). Customersââ¬â¢ perceptions can be influenced through reference groups and opinion leaders but should offer desired and more than perceived results in order to create long term value and mutual benefits in the competitive business environment.... In short, brand loyalty is driven by effective customer relationship management programs and initiatives offering mutual benefits and advantages to organizations and customers. The research is based on identifying the Ducati customer perception and brand loyalty. It needs to be mentioned that in spite of a number of companies manufacturing high quality and attractive motorcycles, a certain group of customers prefer to buy Ducati motorcycles. The research aims at identifying their perception towards Ducati and its motorcycles along with assessing brand loyalty. However, in this particular discussion, only theoretical aspects of brand loyalty and customer perception has been presented and practical implication will be highlighted in the later part of the research in an illustrative and logical manner. A highly satisfied customer will tend to buy more product and services of the brand with whom he can relate to in the short as well as in the long run. It needs to be understood that bran d loyalty is often useful and economical for the buyer and seller. The buyer can stick to a particular brand without investing much in competitors brand along with availing great benefits of brand loyalty offered by organizations. Loyalty is awarded and rewarded in different ways depending on the structure and policies of organizations. When it comes to expensive products and services, customer perception and loyalty is driven by wide arrays of variables. Price can be considered as one of the most important variables deciding the perception and loyalty level of customers. Ducati Motorcycles come with a hefty price tag and with a positive perception of motorcycles; customers are willing to invest their money in it. If the actual and real performance and services of

Political factors: One needs to be in the good books of the government. There are influences the management needs to create through indirect lobbying. Forms of sponsorships, grants, political donations, etc. are to be made to keep the balance. To get an easy access to the govt. former govt officials are hired by the retail chains. The retail chain has to be a member of various lobbies, for instance Freight transport association, British retail consortium, Institute of grocery retailers, confederation of British industry, labor groups, etc Environment issues need to be taken care of-proper recycling of waste, use of recyclable poly bags, and no harm to the ever depleting natural resources. Any changes in the govt/EU policies have to be addressed. Economic Environment Changing economy is the biggest affecting factor. Consider the present situation where there is a worldwide slump and the market is seeing trends of salary cuts, the purchase power of the buyer goes down and hence the revenues of the retail are getting affected. The changing exchange rates affect the imported product price. Needless to say the buyer looks for value for money in the retail chains and thus will not be pleased with an expensive product. Raise in global price for fuel affect transportation cost and in turn the cost price of the product. Increase in real estate increases the fixed cost thereby affecting the revenue model. Social Issues: Lifestyle changes will demand need for greater product categories. People will demand more of functional food rather than fad foods. The shifting demographics, the young buyer will have different demands from the ageing population of U.K. With increasing competition, the consumer wants the best

Art and Society Essay All art whether it be visual, music, literature, film, etc. is affected by the specific cultural climate in which it is produced (time, place, social conventions, etc.) and is often created in reaction to movements or styles that came before it. How important is it to know these sorts of historical details to appreciate a work of art?à To know the historical details of a work of art is essential because without it you would never be able to aprreciate the work the same way. To be able to understand it better one has to know at what point in time was it made so when you see a painting of a steamboat knowing that the painting was made just after it was invented would give you a much different understanding than if it was made yestaerday. To whole different emotional responsed would be made. This is the same for the place (culture) social conventions, etc. What is Good Art?à 8. As you wander through the contemporary galleries on the first or second floor, select a work of art that leaves you puzzled at best. Write down the title and the artist. Research the piece at the library or on the internet, or speak to an art expert to understand the artist and the intended message.à (a) Does this new information change your appreciation for the piece? Explain by referring specifically to the artists intention and the specific work. I chose The Bremen town musicians by Gim Hong-Sok South Korea. After searching in the internet I found out that the sculpture of the Donkey, Dog, Cat and a Rooster, is actually based on a story by the Brothers Grimm with the same title, I had no idea what the sculpture meant at that time because there is no description except a fictional one which states that the furry animal costumes are a family of Mexican illegal aliens and that they are paid 8 dolars a day for posing as said sculpture. I think that Gim just wanted to add some humor to art and to the viewer, as many works of art are deeply sentimental and emotional, which I found very satisfiying. In your contemporary gallery wanderings, choose two pieces of work you consider to be good and two you consider bad art.à (b) Identify the pieces and state the criteria you consider to be important in making good contemporary art[PH1].à à Good Artà Why?à Impenetrable-Monaà I think its very good art because its a very innovative piece of work, it is just long lines of steel tubes in the form of a cube but the spaces are so tightly together and with small spikes which make the piece impenetrable just like its named. It also looks modern and neat as it appears to be floating in the air and can be appreciated in 360. Bad Artà Why?à Jean Paul Riopelle-Untitledà I think this is bad art because, there is no pattern at all its just random splashing of colours, and the piece of work doesnt even have a title, which makes me think as a receiver that Riopelle was just too lazy to come up with a decent name because there was no feeling input into it.à (c) If the artworks you were looking at werent part of a national collection and within a purpose-built gallery designed by an internationally recognized architect would you still view them the same way? Who do you think makes the decisions of what appears in National Gallery exhibits? Does their expertise and background matter in your experience of the works? If the pieces I saw were not a part of the national collection, I wouldnt view the same way because they wouldnt have the same artisitic value. If a piece of art is recognized by the world and known artists and collections, it gives the works of art much more significance. This doesnt mean everything that they consider art is something I will also consider art just because its in the gallery.à (d) Do you have the same reactions to the works online as you did viewing them in person? Whats missing? Is this important in viewing art? Can we have the same understanding of something filtered through a virtual experience as exposed to actually experience it in person? Interestingly, one exhibit in the galleries is two computers linking to the website atworkandplay.caà No I dont have the same reaction because the quality and the size you can appreciate the works of art is totally different in real life, art is not just viewing but also EXPERIENCING and if you just view it online you are missing the experience of actually being there.
Bayer case2 Essay Example for Free
Bayer case2 Essay Supply chain factors must also be taken into account in the decision-making if substantial capacity changes are involved ââ¬â like reintroducing Bayer Aspirin. Key questions include: What impact will the changes have on suppliers, warehousing, transportation, and distributors? If capacity will be increased, will these elements of the supply chain be able to handle the increase? Conversely, if capacity is to be decreased, what impact will the loss in business have on these elements of the supply chain? Finally, customer and public opinion is very crucial to consider during decision-making. Will they still accept the new reintroduced product as before? What would be the common sentiments of the people regarding the possible decision? In evaluating alternatives during decision-making, a manager must consider both quantitative and qualitative aspects. Quantitative analysis usually reflects economic factors, and qualitative considerations include intangibles such as public opinion and personal preferences of managers. Thus, in deciding for the Bayer Aspirin case, is not solely dependent on economic factors because these are not the only things that would be affected when changes are being implemented. As an organization, Bayer should draw out what are the quantitative and qualitative considerations at hand, in order to come up with efficient and effective decisions for their company. 4. ) In what ways is Aspirin Brand valuable for Bayer? When aspirin first appeared in the spring of 1899 in a handful of articles in a few German medical journals, the author introduced it without fanfare as a serviceable substitute for the salicylic acid and sodium salicylate that had been in use for more than twenty years to treat rheumatic disorders. Aspirin reduced fever and inflammation quickly, but more importantly it did not appear to have an ill effect on the stomach. Side effects were minimal, so patients tolerated it quite well and they did not rebel against the treatment. The doctors who tested it and the company that manufactured it therefore recommended the drug as a promising anti-rheumatic medication and no doubt expected respectable profits from its use in this modest market. No one, however, apparently anticipated that in less than two decades this new compound would become the manufacturers best-selling medicine and the worlds most widely used drug (a distinction it still holds), not so much because of its role in treating rheumatism but because of its effectiveness in managing minor pain, especially headaches. And by the time Aspirins overall popularity was apparent, it was also apparent that it had achieved this exalted status not simply because of its considerable medical merits but also because of the deliberate business policies and practices of its manufacturer, the Farbenfabriken vormals Friedrich Bayer und Companie of Elberfeld, Germany, or simply known as Bayer. Headquartered in Leverkusen, Germany, Bayer is involved in 20 different business units that research, develop and manufacture products in the life sciences, polymers and specialty chemicals areas. Considered as the ââ¬Å"jewelâ⬠at the very center of the Bayer crown, Aspirin is more than just a brand name that Bayer acquired. It is without question the most successful over-the-counter drug in history. In fact, 1999 marked the 100th anniversary of Aspirin, it is still the number two analgesic drug in the world with net sales in 1998 of DM1. 1 billion (US$654. 8 million). Only Tylenol exceeds ASPIRIN in sales, but 95% of Tylenols sales are in the US; in the rest of the world, Bayer is still number one (Buchanan and Merker, 2002). As a brand, its popularity is undeniable around the world. Exhibit 3 shows that the market of Aspirin covers 90 countries. At present, Bayer Aspirin is a family of well-known brands and products, which includes Childrens ASPIRINà ®, ASPIRINProtectà ®, ASPIRIN Directà ®, ASPIRIN+Cà ®, and many others. All are geared for specific uses such as cough and cold, headache and pain, stroke and heart attack prevention. Many have unique delivery systems such as granules, effervescent tablets, and chewable forms. Of the US$654. 8 million in total worldwide net sales of all Aspirin products in 1998, US$37. 5 million (5. 8%) came from the sale of Childrens ASPIRINà ®. In reality, Aspirin as brand propelled Bayerââ¬â¢s success all throughout its history. By promoting Aspirin (not acetylsalicylic acid), Bayer had foreseen that the brand name would be so firmly entrenched in the medical community that when the patent expired, rival manufacturers of ASA would be unable to compete in the American market. True enough that by 1909, Aspirin accounted for 31% of Bayers US sales. Although Bayer continues to hold a trademark on the brand name in many countries of the world, it had once lost that right in several key countries like the United States. Bayer trademark was lost initially in the US at the end of World War I to Sterling Drug, Inc. as the result of the US governments retaliatory practice of confiscating and then auctioning off the property of German companies with holdings in the United States. It wasnt until 1994, 76 years after the expropriation of the trademark Bayer Aspirin, that Bayer Group finally reacquired the brand. According to the Bayer Website, Bayer continues to look for new possibilities for Aspirin, being considered as the miracle or wonder drug. In 1988, Australian epidemiologist Professor G. Kune discovered that people who took Aspirin had a 40% lower incidence of colon cancer than those who did not. Later, a number of studies, including a large-scale study conducted by the American Cancer Society, confirmed that Aspirin is indeed effective in preventing colon cancer. According to one estimate, Aspirin inhibits cell mutation, a theory that paves the way for future research and the promise of new developments. Research is also being conducted into Aspirins effects on Alzheimers Disease and diabetes. Thus, Aspirinââ¬â¢s value for Bayer do not just depend on the brand name itself, but all its hidden potentials that could benefit all sick people because of its low price and time-tested usefulness. 5. ) How is the pharmaceutical market and the market for Aspirin evolving? Is it to the advantage or disadvantage of pharmaceutical companies? Originally prescribed for rheumatic disorders, aspirin has come a long way of just adrug marketed to reduce fever and inflammation quickly. As a drug, aspirin not only has the properties of an analgesic or painkiller, it is also an antipyretic (anti-fever), an anti-inflammatory and an anti-platelet (see Table 1). The first three qualities make it a headache, cold, and flu medication, but it is the fourth quality that makes Aspirin a preventive medication. Interestingly, the anti-platelet effects of aspirin occur at a surprisingly low dosage: 30-50 mg. or so, and Childrenââ¬â¢s ASPIRIN is one of the lowest dose aspirin products on the market. It also happens to be the cheapest among the ASPIRIN family of products. The significance of these two characteristics gave Childrenââ¬â¢s ASPIRIN a new market, as doctors around the world started recommending and prescribing Childrenââ¬â¢s ASPIRIN to their middle-aged patients as a means of prevention.

THREATS New and existing competition Increase in the price of raw materials Economic recession Far-east low cost brands High competition for customers and resources CHAPTER TWO ELICITING AND EVALUATING STRATEGY Tesco is pursuing hybrid strategy in all their markets. Tesco strategies can therefore be analysed with the Bowmans strategy clock below. ssssss Tesco Position on clock C:Userspc userPicturesbowmans_lesson.gifT According to strategyexplorer.com online resource, a hybrid strategy seeks simultaneously to achieve differentiation and low price relative to competitors. Tescos Hybrid Strategy is pre-dominant in the UK market. Rival organisation like Asda seek to pursue low cost strategy and another rival, Sainsburys tend to pursue differentiation (broad) Strategy. Hybrid strategy can give an organisation advantage especially when larger volumes of sales can be achieved. This is a plus to Tesco competitive advantage considering their market share in the U.K market. Tescos aspirations in the near future are to pursue full differentiation strategy which they may want to achieve in phases. In additional to this Strategy, Tesco also utilises Market development strategy which has increased their balance sheet strength and global presence. According to online information from Tescoplc.com, Tesco Diversifying into areas like Non-food, Financial services and Telecoms and also new markets abroad in Asia, Central Europe and recently into the United Tescos strategy towards market Development has broadened their scope of business over the years into new markets outside the U.K. Tesco has an established and sustainable. Their Strategic decision to diversify in 1997 has contributed to their success in recent years. (www.Tescoplc.com) TESCO STRATEGY OBJECTIVES: According to Tesco online source, the objectives of their strategy are: To be a successful international retailer To grow the core UK business To be as strong in non-food as in food. To develop retailing services such as Tesco Personal Finance, Telecoms and Tesco.com To put community at the heart of what they do. TESCO TWO AREAS OF CORE COMPETENCIES Core and distinctive competencies are very important to any organisation who wants to lead in its industry and also provide customer value. According to Hunger J.D and Wheelan, T.L (2001) P.56, Resources are the organisations assets. Core competence capabilities, in this context mean the ability of such organisation to exploit and use these resources. These resources can be analysed by Barneys VRIO framework below. TESCO VRIO FRAMEWORK RESOURCES V R I O H.R Yes Yes Yes Yes Online shopping Yes Yes Yes Yes 24hr stores Yes Yes Yes Yes Cash Flow position Strong Yes Yes Yes Yes Balance sheet Yes Yes Yes Yes Tesco is very strong considering the resources they have at their disposal. They also utilise all these resources to the fullest. They are in a very strong position both in the U.K and around the globe where they are operating. According to tutor2u.net (online) (n.d), core competencies are those capabilities that are critical to an organisation achieving a competitive advantage. Two areas of Tesco core competencies are: The Tesco.com experience Non-food strategy strength The Tesco.com will; Effectively supply good customer interface that personalises online shopping which make it more efficient thereby giving customers value. The non-food strategy is one of the strongest tools Tesco has at the moment. It is giving them advantage to tap into new markets with very high margins. CHAPTER THREE IS TESCO CORE COMPETENCES AND STRATEGY SUSTAINABLE? If we want to analyse whether these resources and competencies are sustainable, I would say yes. I arrived at this conclusion because looking at the strategy they are pursuing and their core competencies couple with their market penetration and development around the globe, they should be able to sustain these core competencies and strategy. It can also be noted according to the speech of Tesco director that they are market leaders in most of their international markets. TESCOS PESTEL ANALYSIS POLITICAL FACTORS Tesco is a globalised company as they operate in many countries. Political conditions and legislations in these countries have highly influenced Tescos success. ECONOMIC FACTORS Tesco does not have any power over economic factors. Economic factors can affect cost, prices, demand and profits. SOCIOLOGICAL FACTORS According to Ivory research (Online) (2010), current trends have indicated that British customers have moved towards one stop and bulk shopping, which is due to various sociological changes. Aging population now eat ready meals which reduces cooking at home. TECHNOLOGICAL FACTORS Ivory research (online 2010), stated that new technologies benefit both customers and Tesco. Food chains have been more accurate and equipments like self checkout, electronic fund transfer facilities have really increased the success of Tesco globally. ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS There have been increased demands from organisations for responsibility of the environment. Tesco has commitment on corporate responsibility to the environment they operate in. LEGAL FACTORS Various legislations from different government have influence on Tesco, For example, legislations about suppliers and so on. STRATEGIC COMMENTARY Tescos core competencies can really help them to achieve an increased competitive advantage. This is obvious because of their focus on new markets outside the U.K. Tesco needs to focus on their key strategies like the Non-food and the tesco.com. Tescos customer loyalty can be sustained by continuous customer value provision. Tapping into new international market is a good turn for Tesco has this will increase their global market share and turnover. Tescos fresh and easy brand in the United States would develop and increase their global profit turnover if they focus on that market. CONCLUSION Tescos strategic direction for the future is very important and crucial to their global strength. I can see Tesco competing closely with Grocery giant, Wal-Mart in the nearest future. Their success in the last 12 years has proved that they can really move into the global market and become like coca-cola in the nearest future.

Anylasis of Humbert :: essays research papers
Humbert Humbert à à à à à Humbert Humbert in the book Lolita is the type of person who will do anything to satisfy his needs. When Humbert is institutionalized in an insane asylum he toys with the doctors. Once he got to a certain age Humbert felt like he needed to get married to suppress his sexual desires, so he did. Later on Humbert realizes the only way he can be with Lolita is by marrying her mother, Charlotte. After Hubert loses his control on Lolita he gets the need to get revenge on the person who has taken Lolita from him. A person can grow up into being a very needy person or someone who always needs to be in control by how they are raised and their surroundings. à à à à à The second instance of Humbert goes into a mental asylum he manipulates the doctors making them believe false diagnoses. He gets a certain joy from tricking the doctors. Humbert describes the joy: ââ¬Å"I discovered there was an endless source of robust enjoyment in trifling with psychiatrists: cunningly leading them on; never letting them see that you know all the tricks of the trade, inventing for them elaborate dreamsâ⬠¦ teasing them with fake primal scenesâ⬠¦ (Nabokov 34) He goes to certain extremes to satisfy his wants. Humbert goes as far as bribing a nurse so he can see that the doctors were misdiagnosing him. This back and forth with the doctors was nothing more than a game for Humber. This type of control was making him really happy so he decided to stay even longer than he needed to at the insane asylum. ââ¬Å"The sport was so excellent, in results in my case so ruddy that I stayed on for a whole month after I was quite well. And then I added another week just for the pleasure of taking on a powerful newcomer.â⬠(Nabokov 34) à à à à à Once he became a young adult Humbert knew that he needed to repress his sexual desires for young nymphets so he married Valeria. When he married Valeria, she was a very young looking polish girl. This way he was able to be with someone that reminded him of nymphets and still able to have a certain sense of security. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦what really attracted me to Valeria was the imitation she gave of a little girl.â⬠(Nabokov 25) Humbert didnââ¬â¢t really love her he was just using her for her young looks.

History behind Frankenstein Essay -- Mary Shelley
Mary Shelley, a Romance author, began writing during the period of the French Revolution (1789-1799). Members of the Revolution believed that the few individuals who were leading them were going to change the world. After the wars that followed the French Revolution had taken their toll, it became evident that these leaders could not even succeed in maintaining authority. The hundreds that followed them were forced to accept abandonment by their leaders and a new order. Shelleyââ¬â¢s first novel, Frankenstein, expresses this disillusionment that was experienced by herself and those around her. In this novel a young scientistââ¬â¢s selfish ambition becomes the ruin of his world, ââ¬Å"Learn from me, if not by my precepts, at least by my example, how dangerous is the acquirement of knowledge, and how much happier that man is who believes his native town to be the world, than he who aspires to become greater than his nature will allowâ⬠(p. 48). Frankenstein is a fictional story about a young man who creates a human. He makes this creature with the physical attributes of a man, eyes, ears, mouth, mind, and the senses. Victorââ¬â¢s motivation was personal glorification, ââ¬Å"A new species would bless me as its creator and source, many happy and excellent natures would owe their being to meâ⬠p.49. Similarly the revolutionaries sought distinction in the creation of a new order or nation. Soon after its birth, however, Victor abandons his creation because of his inability to accept the responsibility that came with completion. This is similar to the leaders of the revolution in Shelleyââ¬â¢s time. They began a powerful movement that promised glory, but which they could not control. The result of their abandonment caused death in the wars that followed. As the sto... ...apse of the French Revolution, without leadership it could not be successful. There had been no reconciliation and it had died away among scattered wars. Frankenstein seems to represent an unfinished tale to an unfinished portion of Shelleyââ¬â¢s life. She could not write an end to her revolution because the French Revolution had dissolved into an unrecognizable idea. I would not simply categorize Frankenstein as a science fiction novel. Mary Shelley was writing on her life and times. She and other Romance writers were impacted by the crush of the French Revolution and the high ideals which it promised. These disappointments are evident in Frankenstein as Victor Frankenstein creates, abandons, and is eventually destroyed by his selfish ambition, as were the revolutionaries. The Reluctant Scientist :: Personal Narrative Science Essays
The Reluctant Scientist So I have to ask myself, how it came to pass that a woman who has little interest in science (never, in fact, dissected so much as a single frog in high school), who never wanted to teach children any older than second graders, and who most importantly, loathes, and I mean that with a capital L, Loathesrodents of all sorts, came to be in a science classroom full of fourth grade students, picking ratsââ¬â¢ bones out of hairballs? Well, it wasnââ¬â¢t easy, let me tell you. It all began innocently enough about two years ago, when my younger daughter, now ten, came home full of bubbling enthusiasm for her classesââ¬â¢ latest science project. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re doing owl pellets, Mom,â⬠she informed me. ââ¬Å"We get to find the bones and take them out and figure out what they are! Today we found a voleââ¬â¢s skull!â⬠Having no idea what she was talking about, I said what all good moms do in order to demonstrate I was properly interested, ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s nice dear,â⬠and promptly forgot about what she had said as I turned my attention to something that I did understand. Owl pellets only returned to the forefront of my thinking several days later, when I visited my daughterââ¬â¢s classroom to fulfill my ongoing volunteer commitment to the school. The students were in the middle of science when I arrived, and spread out on their desks were an assortment of scales, rulers, tweezers, charts, tiny bones, and suspicious looking piles of gray fluff. Caitlin sprang from her desk and ran towards me. ââ¬Å"Mom! Come see what Kimhee and I have!â⬠Pulling me by the arm, she brought me over to her and her partnerââ¬â¢s table, where they had the same odd assortment of items. It appeared as if the were reassembling some of the bones into a rather dubious looking skeleton. Wrinkling my nose, I asked, ââ¬Å"What isthat?â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s the skeleton of a vole, Mommy. I told you all about it at home,â⬠Caitlin replied, somewhat accusingly. Kimhee reached into the stack of papers on the table and extracted a detailed diagram of what appeared to be a rodent skeleton and offered it to me. ââ¬Å"We got the bones from our owl pellet, and now weââ¬â¢re putting them back together,â⬠Caitlin continued. ââ¬Å"See, hereââ¬â¢s the skull. We had another one, but we donââ¬â¢t have enough of the rest of the bones to make two skeletons.â⬠ââ¬Å"What exactly is an owl pellet?â⬠I inquired hesitantly, not at all sure that I wanted to know the answer. Once again, my daughter looked at me impatiently.

David Beckham
Comm 423 The Value of David Beckham Dik Yi Tse (230052113) Ryan Darmasubrata (230055322) The purpose of this paper is to evaluate one of the most phenomenal transfers in the football world. The transferred of David Beckham from Manchester United to Real Madrid has becoming the talk of not just football fans but the financial expert for the last 2 years. Unlike most transfers, the David Beckham transfer has revolutionized player transfer in the football world. It became the standing point on how football player is not valued according to their skills on the field but rather on their skills outside the field. The paper will evaluate the cause, the reasons and the effect of the transfer based on both technical and financial aspects. In order to evaluate the transfer based on its financial aspect, we will use analytical theory of production and competition between firms. [pic] [pic] Variable cost satisfies the following formula: [pic] [pic] Return function: [pic] C: variable cost S: unit price of the product K: fixed cost ?: rate of diffusion r: discount rate T: duration of the facility With the formulas above, we try to justify the returns of the football clubs under different environment. From the calculations, we can see the change of revenue for the football clubs between fixed costs at different levels of market size. David Beckham David Beckham is an English footballer, widely regarded as the biggest icon in the sport. He currently plays for Real Madrid and he is the captain of England national team. David Beckham is especially noted for the quality of his crossing and the ability to hit free-kicks particularly from long-range and swinging corners. He is also famed for his celebrity lifestyle trappings, media attention and marketing potential. Early on in his career Beckham secured a number of lucrative sponsorship deals including Brylcreem, Adidas, Vodafone (which ended in July 2005) and Diesel. Despite the USA's uneven acceptance of soccer, Beckham's recognition in the USA is strong enough to enable him to appear in print and television advertising for various sponsors, including Gillette razors. He has become more well known in North America since the success of the British film Bend It Like Beckham, about a British Sikh girl who idolizes David Beckham and harbours ambitions of being a football player. David was born on May 2, 1975 in Leytonstone, London to Ted and Sandra Beckham. David's parents were Manchester United supporters and he accompanied then to many of the games. He signed for Manchester United as a trainee in July 1991 and he was instrumental in helping the club win the FA Youth Cup in May 1992, scoring in the second leg of the final against Crystal Palace. His Premier League debut eventually came at home to Leeds United on April 2, 1995. Partially as a result of injuries to key starters, David established himself in the first team during the 1995/96 season. David's match-winning performances during 1996/97 helped United to win another Premiership title and reach the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. On a personal level, he was voted Young Player of the Year and second in the overall Player of the Year poll. Manchester United's 1997/98 season was one to forget as they finished second to Arsenal in the League, lost to Barnsley in the FA Cup and were knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Monaco. David enjoyed a memorable moment, when he was selected for England's World Cup Finals squad. Heââ¬â¢s been a team member ever since. Beckham captained England for the first ime in a friendly match in Italy and retained the armband for the friendly with Spain and the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Finland, against whom he scored an important goal at Anfield. Beckham made his 85th appearance for England in 2005 and is expected to captain the team at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. If so, he would become only the six th England player to represent his country at three World Cup competitions (although Sol Campbell and Michael Owen are expected to achieve this feat at the same time), and the fourth (after Billy Wright, Bobby Moore and Bryan Robson) to captain the team at more than one World Cup. Beckham is also a reasonable candidate to record 100 appearances for his country. He captained his country for a landmark 50th time in the friendly international against Argentina in November 2005. Beckham is one of only four players to have appeared 100 times in the Champions League. The reasons for transfer Manchester United First reason: David Beckham only had 2 more years contract with Manchester United and under the Bosman rule, every player can sign another contract with another team in the term of 6 months before his contract expired. Because of the clause of the Bosman transfer rule, any club can get David Beckham signature without paying any fee to Manchester United, if David Beckham decide not to sign any new contract within the next one and a half years, Manchester United would lose their biggest asset without getting any returns. Second reason: David Beckham relationship with his manager was in the midst of trouble. David Beckham popularity has divided his concentration between his job on the field and on the runaway. With having conservative method of running a football club, Sir Alex Ferguson, Manager of Manchester United had concern that David Beckham was not performing as best as he should. Hence arguments had arisen in numbers of occasion. Third reason: Pepsi and Adidas played a big role in forcing David Beckham to move to Real Madrid. For Pepsi, it would be more profitable for them to have David Beckham to play in Real Madrid because Real Madrid has three other players that have sponsorship deals with Pepsi. But the biggest influence came from Adidas, which is the main sponsor to David Beckham. Manchester Untied is sponsored by Nike, Adidas biggest competition in the industry and Real Madrid is sponsored by Adidas, so it would be so much better for Adidas to have David Beckham to play in Real Madrid instead of Manchester United. Fourth reason: Manchester United needs more young players in their squad, while the average age of their rosters has reach 30 years old, Manchester United needs to find another potential young player to maintain their reputation, the sale of David Beckham would bring the necessary capital for the investment. Real Madrid Real Madrid is a very successful club with championââ¬â¢s reputation at their back, their starting lineup is filled with star players, hence their advantage was also their biggest weakness. With many star players in their team, Real Madrid has a high fixed cost in their operation, but most of their star players are not very commercial. Majority of the players are just big names within the industry or in the European market. Real didnââ¬â¢t have any network in the Asian and North American market at the time. With football to be the number one sport in Asia, Real Madrid was missing majority of the action. As a result in 2002/03 season, Real Madrid only spotted themselves the 8th on the list of the richest club in the world. Real Madrid needed to find a player who would pioneer their marketing strategy to the whole world. They are not only looking for someone who can bring sponsors to their stadium, and not just a poster boy for the campaign, but also has the skills to show in the field. This is the ultimate reason why Real Madrid was very determined to get Beckham. The effects of David Beckham to Real Madrid Real Madrid's revenue from club merchandise, such as shirts, jumped 67 per cent in Beckham's first season alone, and climbed another 6. 5 per cent in the year to June. Overall commercial income, which includes money from deals with the likes of Siemens, Adidas and Pepsi, which have all grown in value with the ââ¬Å"Beckham effectâ⬠, now stands at around ? 80m a year. Real Madrid also earned ? 48m (26 per cent of turnover) from match-day income (primarily ticket sales), ? 44m (24 per cent) from television, and ? 6m (8 per cent) from promotional activities such as lucrative overseas tours and friendliness, which have also become better earners because of David Beckham. And whereas Real Madrid's annual wage bill (? 98m) now equates to 52 per cent of turnover, and is falling towards an expected ratio of 47 per cent next year. With the financial improvement, Real Madrid is now the richest club in the world, beating Manchester United who wo n the title 8th consecutive years. 2005 Football clubs revenue ranks[1]: 1 Real Madrid (Spain) $330 million Manchester United was No. 1 when it had David Beckham. Now Real Madrid has him and became No. 1. 2 Manchester United (England) $295 million Slips out of the top spot for the first time in the nine-year history of the rankings. 3 AC Milan (Italy) $280 million Nearly 60 percent, or $165 million, of its revenue is from broadcasting ââ¬â more than anyone else. 4 Juventus (Italy) $274 million Averages only 26,600 fans but moves up from No. 5 last year thanks to a lucrative TV contract. 5 Chelsea (England) $264 million Its otherworldly payroll makes it No. in annual net losses, which reportedly were $244 million. Evaluating the transfer [pic] In determining the justification for the transfer, we use the analytical theory to prove that even though Real Madrid paid a large sum of transfer fee and obligated to pay a high salary to David Beckham, the acquisition would profit Real Madrid more because the larger market size that David Beckham can open for Real Madrid. To make the calculation to be accurate as possible, we had made some assumptions for the numbers used in the calculation. Reader should keep in mind that because Real Madrid is a private organization, it is very hard to find the actual data about their current and past financial statements. Nevertheless, we did our best to present the numbers as it would present the actual case scenario. Fixed cost (K), because we do not have the actual numbers for the fixed operation cost from Real Madrid, we use the assumption that fixed cost would be equal to the salary of the players. We know that there are other things that contribute to the clubs fixed cost but for the sake of the formulation we are ignoring that. The fixed cost increased from $98 million to approximately $117 million because of David Beckham. Discount rate (R), according to our research, the closest number that we found for the discount rate during that time in Spain, was the checking account interest rate, provided by the banks in Spain. Hence we use this number as our discount rate. Term of project (T), David Beckham was 28 years old when Real Madrid bought him from Manchester United, using the assumptions that most football players can play until the age of 34 years old, we use the length of project to be 6 years. Uncertainty rate (sigma), if Real Madrid did not buy David Beckham, they would have an uncertainty rate of 50%, that is they either succeed or not. With David Beckham on their squad, they have bigger uncertainty because they have to add the possibility that will David Beckham can work together with his teammates and produce something positive for the team or will he have some problems in adjusting to the new Spanish strategy. From the marketing strategy, they would also be concern that if David Beckhamââ¬â¢s fans would still like him in Real Madrid jersey. The value of product (S), we used the assumption that major football clubs would want to have a success in both the domestic and international competition but as an organization major football clubs also want to bring profit for their business. Because of these factors we concluded that the value of S should be 2 instead of 1. Market size, we use the assumption that Real Madrid previous market size which is the European market to be 100 and the new potential market involving the Asian and North American market would be 145. The 45% increase due to that in North America, football is not that popular, North American people would prefer to watch and buy basketball, American football, baseball or hockey. For the Asian market, the increase of market size would come from people that buy the merchandise, there is a little chance that they would come to the actual game. Analysis & Conclusion From the calculation, it proved that bringing David Beckham to Real Madrid squad was a positive move. The transfer has solved Real Madridââ¬â¢s problem of having high fixed cost and low returns. David Beckham has managed to open the Asian and North American market for Real Madrid to expand, hence now Real Madrid with high fixed cost on their organization can work and do business more efficiently in larger market size environment. With the emerging of internet and globalization, major sports clubs have tried to improve their business strategy by purchasing international players that can open more potentials market for their business. Another example besides David Beckham is the Chinese International Basketball Player, Yao Ming. Yao Ming was purchased by the Houston Rockets Basketball Club in US. With the help of Yao Ming, NBA (National Basketball Association of America) and Houston Rockets have managed to gain substantial market in the Asia. NBA opened merchandise stores all over Asia and has extradition match between American Basketball Club and the Chinese Basketball Clubs. Their website subscriber, www. NBA. com, has increase significantly during the past 2 years. With major website subscriber coming from the Asian market, it is only for certain that the expansion program will continue with other Asian basketball players coming to the NBA. In baseball, The Seattle Mariners imitated the strategy by purchasing a Japanese National Baseball player, Ichiro. Ichiro is now a market symbol for the major league of baseball, tourist flow from Japan has increased significantly to Seattle. American baseball has gain more popularity because of Ichiro. Ichiro merchandise is one of the top selling merchandise in the league. The main reason for this trend among major sport clubs is the revenue coming from the selling of merchandise and television broadcast license. With the improve technology and internet, fans in other parts of the world can watch their favorite player and club match through website and live television broadcast. The distance and time factors have been eliminated by the technology, hence potential customer is closer in today time. Another factor for the trend is the sponsorship revenue coming from companies that want to put their brand on the teamââ¬â¢s jersey. With sponsoring a sport club, major companies can make brand recognition by associating their brand to a specific sport clubs or players. The better the clubs perform, the better publication that the sponsor company will achieve. The last reason is the revenue coming from exhibition games. An exhibition game is when a sport clubs have a friendly match with other sport club from different country. Higher fee has to be paid to attract famous clubs to come to do exhibition match. Today sport industry is not just about winning a game but also about how much money the games will generate for the clubs, the revenue and reputation are the two main factors that influence the livelihood of a sport club. The higher the fixed cost, the more necessary for club to find a player that can open bigger potential market. REFERENCES Chen, J. 2005. How does John Steinbeck portray racism in ââ¬ËOf Mice And Menââ¬â¢ Essay
From the s neverthelessteenth Century, when the first settlers arrived, immigrants dreamed of a remedy life in America. People went in that respect to escape from discrimination or p ein truthplacety, and to unsex a new life for themselves or their families. They dreamed of making their fortunes in the goldfields. For legion(predicate) the dream became a nightm atomic number 18. The horrors of slavery, of the Ameri locoweed obliging War, the growth of towns with slums as bad as those in Europe, and the corruption of the Ameri bath political system led to mevery tatterdemalion banks. For the Ameri tail end society as a whole the dream ended with the w each(prenominal) Street crash of 1929. This was the start of the vast Depression that would affect the whole orb during the 1930s. However the dream survived in the hope of individuals. Thousands made their way west to atomic number 20 to escape from their farmlands in the mid-West. George and Lennie dreamt of there sm every (prenominal) house and a couple of estate. However, between 1929 39 there was a general world destine in trade and prosperity. A great convey of m unmatchedy had been spent on the first-year World War, and countries rear themselves in debt. lashings of Ameri gutter lost their jobs. They joined bands of drift farmers, looking for work. The farm owners of California found that they could pay very low wages, and be fill manpower to work for long hours, as the demand for work was so great. The men were scarce needed for short periods at a beat, for harvesting and so they had to endure around for work.On October 24, 1929, the stock marketplace crashed. Prices began to decline early in the daylight, triggering a selling panic in the current York Stock Exchange (NYSE). This caused the loss of jobs of mingled workers, scandalous or touch. It was very voteless for the workers to find a job elsewhere in any other(a) farms, that like George and lennie. These kinds of work ers were c solely tolded itinerant workers. The coming months power saw no recovery. The racism, which Martin Luther King spill the beanss closely in his famous I had a dream speech, states that lily- flannel men approximate they seduce got power over sable state. That all men are created equally, and no hotshot differs from each other. The black people have to establish up their seats if a white soul comes on to the bus and there is no space left. in like manner black people were non allowed to shop in the alike(p) place as white people. And black people had to send their children to a diametric school to the white people. This is an example of requisition and isolation.Crooks demands isolation because he is black and motivations to influence love all. He is in like manner called names common raccoon . He is proberly one of the most dislike people in the story because of the food colouring of hes scrape up. solely still people secernate crooks the nigger is a authentically comminuted fellow at the same eon. I approximate they on the button call him that because at that time they could say or do anything to a nigger and still locomote away with it. The white boys did not want to sleep in the same inhabit as a black man. I just totally disagree with this because you should not judge a perosn by the col break of the skin. Also crooks him self does not want to sleep with them because of the way the white boys have treated him.Crooks him self is a stable buck which is a very low classed job flush at that time. The white boys call crooks crooks because as a stable buck he waz kicked on the back by a buck cavalry and he is now got a crooked back. Also the white lads have made crooks fight on christmas day with smitty just so he can sit down and have a drink with the white boys on christmas day. I think that is not acceptable because crooks is al pronouncey hurt hes back from the accident with the horse and on top of that he h ad to have a fight with smitty with that injury when smitty was dead fine. All they did do was that they tyied hes hands shtup hes back so he could not punch crooks provided can only kick him. This first starts when crooks privacy is invaded by lennie. When lennie enters crooks dwell with emerge no permission from crooks to ejaculate into the way. Crooks is not very blissful when lennie enters the room and says you got no right to come in my room. This heres my room. Nobody got no rights in here but me Crooks says all of this because he is not really happy with lennies presents in the room. As lennie stays seven-day and longer he starts to find out that lennie is dumb and crooks thinks to him self that he has got the swiftness hand on lennie.Crooks for the first time has got power over aroundone and thats a white man. Then lennie get ats up and says to crooks why are you not care on the ranch and crooks replys by formulation its just because Im calamitous Crooks means by t his quote that the white men on the ranch do not like him. And similarly crooks has got cryptograph to talk to because crooks is the only nigger on the ranch. Then lennie quickly changes the subject and starts lecture about(predicate) the dream him and George have got. But all crooks thinks is hes crazy . He thinks this because he thinks that lennie doesnt know what he is talk about.Crooks taunts lennie thaat George is not qualifying to come back. And crooks also says he might even get hurt. After crooks has state that crooks face lightened up with pleasure in his torture. After crooks has said lennie quickly gets to hes feet and says nothing is going to determine to come George he si going to come back safe. Crooks is really frightened when lennis sayss that and crooks moves further up hes bed and rests hes hands on hes knees. The reasonableness for crooks out burst like that is because all crooks is difficult to do is difficult to make someone tonus like how crooks is nip by telling lennie when the other boys on the ranch play horse fit out he has to stay in hes room and read a agree when he would rather be playing horse shoe with the other workers on the ranch. Crooks is trying say just because i am black they dont let me play horseshoe. Crooks is trying to gain sympthy from lennie but lennie does not really understand what crooks is trying to say to him. So lennie doesnt really feel disturbing for him because he doesnt know what going on. So lennie cant really feel macabre for crooks because he is lost him self in other words. The workers on the ranch answer for crooks as a nigger one second and the other second they be saying he is a very nice fella . I think my self that crooks is a very cheeseparing person and stays quiet throught the book but it is just because of the colour of hes skin he is treated like dirt. blush purpose crooks is proberly the most educated person on the farm. Crooks has got a dictionary which is set f orth as battered and ripped and hes also got some tatered magazines. Also crooks has got some reading books, which are described, as dirty . And all of these things go on a special ledge over hes bunk. When crooks read these books he feels gallant and really important because at this time not much people could read or write. And on top of all that hes a nigger .When we first stir crooks I purview he waz a nasty man because of hes posture and hes colour of hes skin. But looks can be dece-ving because he turned out to be a very well educated person and also soft hearted. It was very unusal for a black man to read or write in these in these measure even so most of the white men could not read or write. I really feel sorry for crooks because he is alll alone and must feel really isolated at multiplication or most of the time. And he has got no company at all and he aint even got no one to talk to at all because hes black. If you ask me I think that is really unacceptable be cause no one should be left alone for that reason. He aint got no friends to say hello too all because of the colour of hes skin. The white boys always pick him on. And even thought it aint hes fault most of the things are unholy on him. Also when the boss is scent really mad he takes it all out on crooks and crooks just gets yelled at for no reason at all. Crooks on the hireachy he is right at the bottom and hes got no power at all. Even thought he has been one of the people who has been working there the eight-day and he has been loyal to boss.Curleys married woman, the guardianship seeker always flirts with other prople on the ranch because her husband is always at the cathouse or out and about. And is never at home to care about her. Curleys wife is one of the most powerful people in the hireachy because she is unify to the boses son. She tries to have some comfort with other people. This is because her husband takes no notice of her obscure from the sex. She is used for an object of sex. When crooks reailses that his chances of being in the dream looked very slim and he crawled back defeated because he cant say anything to Curleys wife at all because she has got all the power. She can get him hung from a tree so easy, she can jus say that he waz prickteaser with me and thats it he would get hung. If that was a white person being prosequted they would give him a trial and would be interpreted to court but just because he is black they would just get him hung without any proof he did it or not. freeing back to the initial question, I think that john Steinbeck doesnt throw the thought of racism in our face. He just hints of the idea and makes do the rest of the thinking. This is turn up whenthe worker calls him a nigger and also a nice fella. We had do some thinking to find out that the word nigger is used so much that the workers dont even think of what the word means.
